About the Role

Terra Consultants are seeking an innovative Senior Civil Engineer to lead, design, develop and construct a large variety of projects from conception through to completion. You will have the support of and report to the Regional Manager and the full in-house support of the Civil Engineering team in Auckland. Your impressive knowledge as an Engineering and Business Professional will enable you to secure more complex civil design projects (commercial, industrial, and infrastructure) for the Waikato office, with the full support and assistance of the Regional Manager. The role is orientated around establishing and leading a Land Development Engineering Design and Civil Engineering team. It is our hope that you will grow into your role as a leader of a team of engineers and assist us with our expansion of this service line locally.

The successful applicant must be ambitious, self-motivated, technically capable, and able to work independently. Our engineers have a flexible role where diversity is encouraged. We have a busy workload ahead of us with many confirmed projects of various scales and complexities ready to be designed. In the role, you will coordinate with other consultants when designing roads, drainage, earthworks, and utility supply. We presently have a significant amount of committed forward work in all development sectors with an incredibly diverse range of project type and scale, with infill residential development being one of our specialties. The geographical reach of our Waikato office includes the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.

  • Your ideal experience and attributes include:

  • Ability to problem solve with the goal to resolve design and development problems;

  • Related qualification and proven working approx. 7+ years in Civil Engineering experience;

  • Confident and capable communicator and team member, ideally with demonstrated project and team leadership;

  • Expert knowledge on 2D and 3D CAD Civil Design (subdivisions) using AutoCAD Civil3D;

  • You will have strong interpersonal skills that will allow you to liaise with other professional disciplines on projects, project manage projects, project elements, discuss project issues and communicate project status reports;

  • To understand and monitor financial information including the ability to forecast forward workloads and put in place effective resource planning strategies to meet current and forward workload requirements;

  • To contribute to the sustainable growth of Terra Group NZ Ltd by the successful introduction of new clients and projects to the business;

  • To assist the Management Team to create resourcing strategies to meet current and future workloads within the business;

  • To operate as a team leader of staff to be assigned to you and provide leadership and mentoring to junior members of the team;

  • Other general duties as directed by the Regional Manager.


What a typical day would look like:

  • You will have the best view in Hamilton from the 13th floor of the Tower Building.

  • You will report to our branch manager in our Waikato office and you will have the opportunity to work closely with senior members of staff;

  • You will work closely with other disciplines in-house and across our three offices to deliver projects for our clients;

  • Undertaking technical and feasibility studies, including site investigations

  • Engineering Design using Civil 3D;

  • Leading meetings and liaising with clients and a variety of professionals, including architects and subcontractors;

  • Managing budgets and project resources;

  • Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of projects;

  • Ensuring the projects run smoothly and are completed within budget and on time – project management;

  • Taking a leading role in project compliance with legal requirements, especially health and safety;

  • Undertaking and reviewing complex calculations and compiling job specs and supervision tendering procedures;

  • Overseeing of construction contracts and contract supervision (where applicable);

  • You will liaise with council for resource consents, engineering approvals and building consents;

  • Oversee and mentor staff;

  • You will have exposure to all facets of the consulting environment from client engagement, to the      preparation of fee proposals, project coordination, and delivery and invoicing of projects – we develop our staff to be great businesspeople as well as great experts in their field.
